Thermoplastic Edgebanding Troubleshooting
Waves on milled edge
Problem
Visible waves or ripples along the machined edge.
Possible causes and fixes
• Feed rate too high
• Cutter speed too low
• Re-process using scrapers and buffing, cut against the feed where possible
• Increase the number of cutters on the router bit
• Increase RPM
Stress whitening in milled areas
Problem
Colour fades or turns white in milled areas, most noticeable on thicker edgebanding.
Possible causes and fixes
• Warm the milled area with a hot-air station, retrofit if required
• Scraper blade chip thickness too high
• Rework on the buffing station
• Reduce scraper blade chip thickness to a maximum of 0.1–0.2 mm
Stress whitening on radiused edges
Problem
White stress marks visible on radiused edges during machining centre processing.
Possible causes and fixes
• Edgebanding fed in too cold
• Increase heater power or reduce feed rate
• Increase geometry or use thinner edgebanding material
Bite marks in the joint
Problem
Small bite marks or gaps visible along the joint line, often called “mice teeth”.
Possible causes and fixes
• Apply more adhesive
• Increase application temperature
• Preheat the board
Edgebanding bonded only at edges
Problem
Edgebanding is bonded at the edges only, not across the full width.
Possible causes and fixes
• Too little pressure applied
• Milled joint on the board is hollow
• Edgebanding pre-tensioning too high
Edge breakout after cross-edging
Problem
Breakout along longitudinal edges after cross-edging.
Possible causes and fixes
• Panel material unsuitable
• Router immersion depth incorrect
• Reduce material removal or use a different panel material
Scratches or indentations on edgebanding
Problem
Indentations or scratches visible on the edgebanding surface.
Possible causes and fixes
• Clean edgebanding draw-in
• Clean press rollers and apply separating agent
• Clean scanning head, inspect and replace if damaged
Breakouts at edgebanding ends
Problem
Breakouts or smearing visible at the ends of the edgebanding.
Possible causes and fixes
• Sharpen the crosscut saw
• Consult the tool manufacturer for a suitable cutting tool
Breakouts on top and bottom edges
Problem
Breakouts visible on the top and bottom edges of the edgebanding.
Possible causes and fixes
• Reduce edgebanding overhang
• Acclimatise boards and edgebanding for at least 24 hours above 18 °C
• Increase room temperature and prevent draughts
Edgebanding smears during copying
Problem
Edgebanding smears during copying operations.
Possible causes and fixes
• Reduce the number of blades
• Adjust RPM
• Mill edgebanding against the feed
• Increase feed rate
Hotmelt Adhesive Troubleshooting
Edge pulls off, glue pattern visible
Problem
Edgebanding pulls off easily by hand. Hot melt adhesive remains on the panel and the glue roller grid pattern is visible.
Possible causes and fixes
• Not enough adhesive applied
• Room temperature too low
• Edgebanding too cold, stored outdoors
• Hot melt adhesive temperature too low
• Feed rate too low, open time exceeded
• Too little pressure from the application roller
Edge pulls off, smooth glue surface
Problem
Edgebanding pulls off easily by hand. Hot melt adhesive remains on the panel with a smooth surface.
Possible causes and fixes
• Board and or edgebanding too cold
• Incorrect hot melt adhesive type
• Bonding agent missing or incorrectly applied
Glue remains on edgebanding
Problem
Hot melt adhesive largely remains on the edgebanding after separation.
Possible causes and fixes
• Board temperature too high due to previous processing, such as veneering
Glue joint not closed, edgebander
Problem
Adhesive joint not fully closed on an edgeband gluing machine.
Possible causes and fixes
• Too little pressure applied
• Adhesive temperature too low
• Edgebanding not pretensioned or reverse pretensioned
• Increase application temperature, preheat the board, or increase feed rate
Glue joint not closed, machining centre
Problem
Adhesive joint not closed during machining centre processing.
Possible causes and fixes
• Too little pressure applied
• Edgebanding fed in too cold and cannot be squeezed
• Edgebanding restoring force too high
• Adhesive not suited for machining centres or adhesion under heat too low
• Increase heater power or reduce feed rate
• Increase geometry or use thinner edgebanding
Edge not fully coated
Problem
Softforming edge not completely coated.
Possible causes and fixes
• Reverse side dirty, greasy, or moist
• Use only dry edgebanding with a clean reverse side
Uneven adhesive coverage
Problem
Panel edge unevenly coated, lower part well coated, upper part insufficiently coated.
Possible causes and fixes
• Panel not square cut
• Application roller inclined
• Square the panel at the saw and align the application roller
Panel surface smeared
Problem
Top side of the panel is smeared after edging.
Possible causes and fixes
• Hot melt amount too high
• After-processing tools poorly adjusted
• Hot melt with poor running behaviour
• Reduce hot melt amount
• Adjust and clean tools, apply separating agent
• Select a hot melt with cleaner running characteristics
Excess adhesive squeeze-out
Problem
Panel edge thickly coated with hot melt, excessive adhesive squeezed out along the edges.
Possible causes and fixes
• Too much hot melt applied
• Reduce hot melt amount
